Tinashe Balakasi has broken the scoring record in the Northern Region Soccer League after pumping in five goals in Simba Bhora's 6-3 win over Chinhoyi Stars at Wadzanai stadium on Friday to take his goal tally to 25 goals in 25 matches.
Balakasi who was in devastating form against Chinhoyi Stars, broke the record which was held by Kasimero Chimbadzwa during the 2014 season when he scored 22 goals when turning out for ZRP FC.
A buoyant Balakasi said he was delighted to have broken the scoring record in the league with an avalanche of goals ending a goal drought which had seen him score only two goals since the resumption of the second half of the league.
"Glory be to God, because after going for a lean spell without scoring, the heavens opened for me and harvested a number of goals which allowed me to break a long standing record with a number of matches still to go before the end of the season," Balakasi said.
"I cherish this record because as a striker you are remembered because of the number of goals you score and the records that you set or break. I want to thank my teammates, the technical staff and the fans for their continued support even when goals were not coming. This gives me the energy to push for a strong finish to the season and break more records even though for me the prime target is winning the title as a team more than individual accolades."
Simba Maramwidze got the other goal for Simba Bhora while Chinhoyi Stars got their goals through Evans Kefasi, Takudzwa Masiye and rising striker Leeroy Karuru.
The win boosts Simba Bhora's confidence ahead of Tuesday's epic clash against fellow title contenders Golden Eagles at Ellis Robbins stadium.
In the other match on Friday, Ngezi Platinum Stars U19 continued with their purple patch moving into seventh position after a 1-0 victory over Harare City Cubs at Baobab stadium.Tinashe Mabvudzi scored the goal for Ngezi Platinum Stars U19.
